Investing in Our Common Future: Healthy Women, Healthy Children.

Traditional donor aid budgets are failing to provide the additional resources needed to improve healthcare across the globe. Women and children continue to die in unacceptable numbers. The answer: innovative new financing mechanisms that complement domestic financing and traditional aid. The Taskforce will report on its recommendations at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 23 September.

The event will be co-hosted by UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and World Bank President Robert Zoellick, as a side meeting to the United Nations General Assembly. This event will take place from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, at the UN Headquarters.

The main objectives of the event are to highlight innovative ways funding is being used to improve maternal and child health, and to focus on ways in which additional resources and high level political support are being translated into better health services for poor people.

The event will include the announcements of new funds generated through innovative strategies, and showcase health system initiatives in developing countries. It will also highlight the importance of the new Consensus on Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health - an agreed framework for action to accelerate progress on protecting health for these vulnerable groups.
